THE CHURCH DEACON. I Timothy 3:8-13. 05/01/2022. #8.

⁸ Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, ⁹ holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. ¹⁰ But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. ¹¹ Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. ¹² Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. ¹³ For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

1. The church care givers

                a. Deacon = helper, one who ministers, a servant

                b. Two uses of the word deacon

                                a1. General term of anyone who serves or helps others (like Phoebe in Romans 16)

                                a2. The office of deacon (a position)

                c. Acts 6:1-7 – the office of deacon was produced out of necessity (to solve administration issues)

                                a1. The apostles and elders (see Acts 15) taught the Word and prayed

                                a2. Temporal issues (food, care giving) had to be managed as well

                d. Like Jethro’s advice to Moses (Ex. 18), the apostles needed helpers to take care of flock

                                a1. Office of deacon was created

                                a2. Deacons were to help elders care for assembly (financial, practical, solutions)

2. Different office, but the same standards

                a. Even though deacons are different than elders, they are held to the same standards

                b. Deacons are to be reverent, sober, and not greedy

                c. Double-tongued = back biting, gossip, rumors

                d. Similar to elders: not a drunkard, covetous, or able to be accused of wrongdoing (blameless)

                e. New requirement: holding onto the mysteries (hidden secrets) with a pure conscience

                                a1. The mysteries = previously hidden secrets of God’s plan of salvation (the gospel)

                                a2. With a pure conscience = not drifting from the faith (a true unwavering faith)

                                a3. A tacit belief that can be swayed will not stand (many fall away from true faith)

                f. Must test a man’s faith before he is a deacon

                g. Not only are the children of deacons to be in submission, but the wives are to be holy as well

                                a1. Wives of deacons are not to be gossips, slanderers, quarrelsome, accusers, drunkards, or unfaithful

                                a2. An unruly wife disqualifies a man to hold the office of deacon

                h. Like elders, a deacon is to be the husband of one wife, and able to rule his house well

                i. A deacon is to have a good reputation and to be known to boldly claim the faith to others

3. Not by might, manipulation, or mandate

                a. The qualifications of church leaders are purely spiritual, chosen by examining their lives

                b. Deacons are not politically elected, an inheritance, by popular appointment, or of necessity

                c. A church runs well if it has godly leadership, but it falters under immature selfish leadership

                    (humility of serving others)

                d. Spiritual leadership makes the church different from all other organizations

                e. The flock is follow the leadership in godliness

CEDARS FOR SOLOMON. I Kings 5:1-10. 05/01/2022. #12.

¹ Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, because he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram had always loved David. ² Then Solomon sent to Hiram, saying: ³ You know how my father David could not build a house for the name of the Lord his God because of the wars which were fought against him on every side, until the Lord put his foes under the soles of his feet. ⁴ But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor evil occurrence. ⁵ And behold, I propose to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spoke to my father David, saying, “Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for My name.” ⁶ Now therefore, command that they cut down cedars for me from Lebanon; and my servants will be with your servants, and I will pay you wages for your servants according to whatever you say. For you know there is none among us who has skill to cut timber like the Sidonians. ⁷ So it was, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly and said, Blessed be the Lord this day, for He has given David a wise son over this great people! ⁸ Then Hiram sent to Solomon, saying: I have considered the message which you sent me, and I will do all you desire concerning the cedar and cypress logs. ⁹ My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea; I will float them in rafts by sea to the place you indicate to me, and will have them broken apart there; then you can take them away. And you shall fulfill my desire by giving food for my household. ¹⁰ Then Hiram gave Solomon cedar and cypress logs according to all his desire.

1. A time to build

                a. David had wanted to build the Temple, but God refused for David was a “man of blood” (I Chronicles 28)

                                a1. David fought many wars and killed many men

                                a2. David was disappointed not the build it

                                a3. David began collecting material for the Temple, so his son could build it

                b. God has different tasks for different people

                                a1. We may want to do a particular ministry, but it might not be ours to do

                                a2. Acts 21:4 Paul = not to minister in Jerusalem

                                a3. Romans 12:4-6 the Spirit determines the gifts and the tasks (Acts 8)

                c. Solomon’s ascension to throne marked a change

                                a1. The end of turmoil in David’s household

                                a2. End of wars (peace on all sides)

                                a3. End of rivalries and divisions

                                a4. Unprecedented prosperity

                                a5. Solomon makes preparation to build the Temple

2. Lebanon lumber

                a. King Hiram of Tyre and David were friends

                                a1. Hiram was impressed with Solomon’s reputation

                                a2. Solomon sent him a request to purchase lumber

                b. Cedar and Cyprus trees grew in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, peaking at Mount Herman (9200+’)

                                a1. Cedar was a valued building material, but expensive since they grow slowly and prefer altitudes between 4,000 and 9,000 feet

                                a2. Cyprus was valued in ship building

                c. Hiram agreed to have his loggers (Sidonians) cut and transport trees as rafts down the Mediterranean Sea to Joppa for the temple

                d. Solomon paid 20,000 kors (3205 bushels or 30,000 gal.) of wheat + 125 gallons of pressed olive oil annually

                e. Solomon plans to build a great house for the Lord

                                a1. If Solomon builds the house to honor the Lord, his motives would be laudable

                                a2. If the temple became a testimony to Solomon’s great achievements than it would be

                                      a corrupt endeavor

3. For the Lord or for me

                a. It is important, whether in evangelism or a great project or building something for the Lord, that God will receive all honor and glory

                b. Christian endeavors are never about the glory of the leaders and workers involved in it

                c. Something dedicated to the Lord must be for usage for the Lord alone

                                a1. God determines what honors him

                                a2. To do a work in our own way to honor God pollutes the work (Aaron’s sons)

                d. Solomon and Israel had to keep the purpose of the Temple in mind at all times

                                a1. Jesus twice drove money changers out of the temple (Matthew 21)

                                a2. Ezekiel was shown the idol worshippers in the temple and the glory of God depart

                                      from it (Ezekiel 10-12)

                                a3. The temple of the Lord was not a lucky charm protecting sinful Judah (Jeremiah 7)

                e. A building, cross, altar, Bible, or sanctuary has no mystical power (tools for use or corrupt)

THE CHURCH ELDER. I Timothy 3:1-7. 4/24/2022. #7.

¹ This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. ² A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; ³ not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; ⁴ one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence ⁵ (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); ⁶ not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. ⁷ Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

1. A desire to lead

                a. The bishop is an overseer

                                a1. The biblical bishop is not the same as a bishop in the Roman Catholic Church

                                a2. The bishop is the same office as elder or presbyter (Greek word for elder)

                b. Paul states that it is good to aspire to be an elder

                                a1. He does not discourage leadership ambition (desire to serve; not lord over)

                                a2. To aspire to be an elder is not to seek power or dominance, but service

                c. Elders are to serve alongside the shepherd (pastor) to teach, help, and guide the flock of God

                d. After the apostles passed from the scene, elders picked up their work as local church leaders (TITUS 1:1-9), just as missionaries, pastors, and teachers picked up the evangelism, church planting, and education functions of the church

2. Qualifications of the elder

                a. A desire to be an elder isn’t akin to a desire to control people or dictate to people

                b. Elders are God’s servants to take care of His flock spiritually as mentors, counselors, and care givers to help meet the needs of the saints

                c. In God’s wisdom he did not make the church a monarchy, republic, democracy, or federation

                d. The qualifications of the elder are not financial, social, or popularity

                e. The qualifications of the elder are spiritual

                                a1. Blameless – of the 6 Gr. words meaning blameless, this one lit. means “unable to lay ahold of” (irreproachable, unimpeachable, or unassailable)

                                a2. Husband of 1 wife (Romans 7:1-4; I Corinthians 7:39)

                                a3. Temperate – sober, self-controlled

                                a4. Sober-minded – serious, prudent

                                a5. Well behaved and hospitable

                                a6. Apt to teach – must be able to impart spiritual truths to others

                                a7. Not given to wine = not a drunkard

                                a8. Not violent = not quick tempered, vicious

                                a9. Not greedy = not materialistic (lover of $)

                                a10. Gentle = cordial, reasonable, patient

                                a11. Not quarrelsome = amiable, peaceable

                                a12. Not covetousness = not a lover of $

                f. Governing his house well (in control)

                                a1. Not meaning that his family is perfect

                                a2. Handles his household well

                                a3. Children should be under submission with respect and proper humility

                g. Not a new convert lest he be tempted like Satan

                h. Having a good reputation with unbelievers

3. Beyond measure

                a. It is wise mature men who can rule well

                b. Church leaders are to be spiritual mentors

                c. Elders are held to a high standard (achievable)

                d. This is the benchmark for all believers

Key Verse: Titus 1:1-9

¹ Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness, ² in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began, ³ but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior; ⁴ To Titus, a true son in our common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. ⁵ For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you— ⁶ if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. ⁷ For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, ⁸ but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, ⁹ holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE. I Kings 4:20-34. 4/24/22. #11

²⁰ Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and rejoicing. ²¹ So Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life. ²² Now Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty kors of fine flour, sixty kors of meal, ²³ ten fatted oxen, twenty oxen from the pastures, and one hundred sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fatted fowl. ²⁴ For he had dominion over all the region on this side of the River from Tiphsah even to Gaza, namely over all the kings on this side of the River; and he had peace on every side all around him. ²⁵ And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, each man under his vine and his fig tree, from Dan as far as Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. ²⁶ Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. ²⁷ And these governors, each man in his month, provided food for King Solomon and for all who came to King Solomon’s table. There was no lack in their supply. ²⁸ They also brought barley and straw to the proper place, for the horses and steeds, each man according to his charge. ²⁹ And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. ³⁰ Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. ³¹ For he was wiser than all men—than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. ³² He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five. ³³ Also he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree of Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. ³⁴ And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

1. God fulfills his promise

                a. Not only did Solomon receive great wisdom, but he also received riches and honor

                b. Both Solomon and his people greatly prospered

                                a1. The land was fruitful and secure

                                a2. Solomon’s fame spread throughout the East

                c. Solomon’s household expanded to the point of consuming large amounts of food

                                a1. 90 kors (cors) of grain each day (1 kor = 60 gallons so 5,400 gallons of grain/day)

                                a2. 30 oxen, 100 sheep, and much wild game

                                a3. Each tribe took turns supplying a month’s supply for the palace

                d. 40,000 stalls for chariot horses + 12,000 horsemen

                e. The abundance continued

2. Wisdom beyond the lot of man

                a. Kings came from all over the East to hear Solomon expound on nature, the weather, the earth, the sea, the cosmos, trees, gems, philosophy, etc.

                b. Solomon excelled over all the famous wise men of his age

                                a1. He wrote 3,000 proverbs and over 1,000 songs

                                a2. No man received more fame, honor, and wealth

                                a3. Solomon understood all things under the sun

3. Drowning in Abundance

                a. There is a danger of prosperity

                                a1. Things came easy for Solomon

                                a2. Never had anyone been so blessed

                                a3. Prosperity is a greater danger to most men than persecution or poverty is

                b. Prosperity is dangerous on multiple levels

                                a1. II Corinthians 12 we begin to think of ourselves as special and gifted

                                a2. Belief that prosperity had been earned and deserved

                                a3. People praise and flatter the prosperous and powerful man to gain favor with him

                                                b1. Tendency to believe the flattery

                                                b2. Greatness is viewed as an earned position rather than a gift from God

                                                      (I Corinthians. 4:7)

                c. Very few people can handle celebrity status

                                a1. God tested Solomon’s faithfulness by bounty just as he tested Job’s faithfulness by trials

                                a2. Solomon started well, but soon he wanted more

                d. Ecclesiastes 2 Solomon decided to see how much wealth he could accumulate, how many grand palaces he could build, how much he could expand his household, and how much glory he could obtain

                e. Solomon began to live a dualistic lifestyle

                                a1. He honored the Lord in public through prayers, offerings, and the Temple

                                a2. He honored himself through foreign wives who turned his heart, high taxes to fund

                                      his opulent lifestyle, and displays of wonder and glory

                f. Solomon’s heart slowly turned away from the Lord

                                a1. This did not happen all at once

                                a2. A man will either be consumed by God and His glory or by self and self-glory, for he cannot successfully do both

                g. Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:1 too late Solomon learned that serving the

                    Lord avoids the vanity of serving oneself

NOT THE EYE, BUT THE HEART. 4/17/2022. EASTER. Matthew 26:6-16.

⁶ And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, ⁷ a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. ⁸ But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? ⁹ For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.” ¹⁰ But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. ¹¹ For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. ¹² For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. ¹³ Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” ¹⁴ Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ¹⁵ and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. ¹⁶ So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.

1. Judas saw more than Mary of Bethany

                a. Judas saw the blind given sight, the lame healed, the dead raised, and the lepers cleansed

                                a1. Saw everything the other apostles saw

                                a2. Judas’ issue was not a lack of evidence

                b. Mary of Bethany may have seen some of the evidence, but may have just heard the stories

                                a1. Rahab the Harlot exercised more faith than most of Israel without seeing miracles

                                a2. The centurion believed that Jesus could heal his servant w/out him entering his house

                c. Judas saw Jesus’s miracles as a means to a political end by which he would gain power and wealth

                                a1. Judas never deviated from his hopes

                                a2. Judas was not looking for a spiritual Christ

2. Judas heard more than Mary of Bethany

                a. Judas heard Jesus’s teachings

                                a1. Jesus spoke of sin, redemption, faith,  eternal life, resurrection, discipleship,

                                      hope, reward, surrender, and deliverance

                                a2. Never once did Jesus speak of overthrowing Rome

                b. Mary listened closely to Jesus’ teachings

                                a1. Martha wanted Mary to help host

                                a2. Jesus tells Martha that Mary had chosen the better part and it would not be taken from her

3. Mary listened to the words of Jesus

                a. Even though the disciples heard more of Jesus’s teachings than Mary, Mary understood what Jesus said and believed him (John 7:25-44)

                b. Even though Jesus clearly spoke of his impending execution, the disciples did not understand or believe

                                a1. They still sought a conquering Messiah

                                a2. On several occasions they asked if he was about to set up his kingdom

                c. The cry of the crowd on Palm Sunday, “Save now”, was a call to deliver them from Rome, not sin

                d. Mary listened carefully to Jesus’s words

                                a1. She believed the Lord when he said that he must be turned over to the Romans to

                                      be crucified

                                a2. She anointed Jesus for his burial

                e. The apostle were outraged at “wasting” a costly ointment on anointing Jesus

                                a1. None of the apostles expected Jesus to be executed

                                a2. When Judas figured out that Jesus was not going to lead a rebellion, he decided to betray him to the Jewish leaders

4. Listening and believing

                a. Many people claim to believe in Christ, his crucifixion, and resurrection, but faith doesn’t impact life

                                a1. Academic belief is not saving belief

                                a2. A life of trust is different than a life of intellectual assent

                b. Mary’s belief caused her to act upon that belief

                                a1. She did what she could to honor the Lord

                                a2. She knew what was ahead, for she listened

                c. If we truly believe that Jesus has saved us from eternal condemnation, our lives will be totally

                    committed to him in faith, trust, attitude, priorities, service, witness, and obedience

                d. Believing means bonding with and submitting to him

Key verse: John 7:25-44²⁵ Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill? ²⁶ But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ? ²⁷ However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” ²⁸ Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. ²⁹ But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.” ³⁰ Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. ³¹ And many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?” ³² The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. ³³ Then Jesus said to them, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me. ³⁴ You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.” ³⁵ Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? ³⁶ What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?” ³⁷ On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. ³⁸ He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” ³⁹ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. ⁴⁰ Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” ⁴¹ Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? ⁴² Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” ⁴³ So there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

A SON BY HALF. I Kings 3:16-28. 04/17/2022. #10.

¹⁶ Now two women who were harlots came to the king, and stood before him. ¹⁷ And one woman said, “O my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth while she was in the house. ¹⁸ Then it happened, the third day after I had given birth, that this woman also gave birth. And we were together; no one was with us in the house, except the two of us in the house. ¹⁹ And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. ²⁰ So she arose in the middle of the night and took my son from my side, while your maidservant slept, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, there he was, dead. But when I had examined him in the morning, indeed, he was not my son whom I had borne.” ²² Then the other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.” And the first woman said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.” Thus they spoke before the king. ²³ And the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son, who lives, and your son is the dead one’; and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’ ” ²⁴ Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.” ²⁶ Then the woman whose son was living spoke to the king, for she yearned with compassion for her son; and she said, “O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him!” But the other said, “Let him be neither mine nor yours, but divide him.” ²⁷ So the king answered and said, “Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him; she is his mother.” ²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.

1. Royal judgment seat

                a. One of the roles of the king was to render judgment

                                a1. David often did not do well in rendering justice (Joab, Amnon, Absalom, Ziba,…)

                                a2. The priests had a role in justice

                                a3. Jethro had advised his son-in-law to appoint helpers to render justice in issues

                                a4. The judges went from village to village to render judgment

                                a5. Samuel’s sons were corrupt in justice

                b. Solomon had been given wisdom by God to issue justice and discern truth

2. Hidden issues

                a. Many times the true facts are hidden in cases

                                a1. Without certifiable witnesses or irrefutable evidence, many cases are unknowable

                                a2. A not guilty verdict often means that there was not enough evidence to convict rather than the accused is innocent of the crime

                b. In the absence of facts, speculation and force of argument take over, often to injustice

3. Two harlots in a house

                a. Two harlots were brought before Solomon

                                a1. Harlots are already women of ill repute

                                a2. Both these harlots live in the same house

                b. Babies of the business

                                a1. Prostitutes often give birth to illegitimate babies (often without knowing the father)

                                a2. Both these harlots give birth 3 days apart

                                a3. In the middle of the night, Harlot #2 rolled over on top of her child, smothering it

                c. Harlot #2 awoke and realized what she had done

                                a1. She exchanged her deceased child with Harlot #1’s live child

                                a2. When Harlot #1 awoke, she realized that the deceased child was not hers

                d. Harlot #1 accused Harlot #2 of making the switch

                                a1. Harlot #2 denied switching babies

                                a2. Lesser officials could not resolve the issue

4. Two halves do not make a whole

                a. After listening to the stories of Harlot #1 and Harlot #2, Solomon has no idea what the truth is

                                a1. Forensics and DNA testing are centuries away

                                a2. There were no witnesses to call forth

GOD’S ORDER IN THE CHURCH. I Timothy 2:11-15. 4/10/2022. #6.

¹¹ Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. ¹² And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. ¹³ For Adam was formed first, then Eve. ¹⁴ And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. ¹⁵ Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

1. Silent sisters

                a. The question arises, “Must women stay silent in the church assembly?”

                                a1. Some churches take this passage to mean that women must not talk in church

                                a2. The entire context must be understood

                b. Context: women must not be teachers in the assembly of believers or have authority over men

                c. The Greek word “silence” does not mean not to utter a sound, but literally, to hold one’s peace

                d. While the entire body is gathered, men are to lead in the assembly, not women

                                a1. Women can speak in church, but not teach while men are in assembly

                                a2. Titus 2:3-5 women can teach women and children (usually up to age 12)

                e. Women are not to exercise authority over men in church (I Timothy 3) – no female deacons, elders, or pastors (Romans 16 Phoebe being a deaconess merely means that she was a “helper” to Paul)

                f. Paul states Eve was deceived, but not Adam

                                a1. Adam did not exercise his protective role given to him by God

                                a2. God assigned male headship as order

2. Male headship

                a. Male headship is a position of responsibility; not power or absolute authority

                                a1. Rm. 5 speaks of the “sin of Adam” and not Eve, for he was responsible

                                a2. Luke 22:24-30 even Jesus, master of all, came to serve and give himself for us

                                a3. Eph. 5:25-33 the role of the husband is to lead, provide for, and protect his wife and children (Eph. 6:4; 1 Timothy 5:8)

                b. Male headship is not a matter of who leads or teaches better, but of divine appointment

                                a1. Husbands, fathers, church leaders, and teachers must give an account (Jm. 3:1)

3. Saved in childbearing

                a. Much debate= she will be saved in childbearing

                b. Saved has two meanings in Scripture

                                a1. To be rescued from danger or trial

                                a2. To be eternally redeemed (spiritual)

                c. If this means women are rescued via birthing…

                                a1. Men may lead, but only woman have the honor of bearing children

                                a2. Not all women bear children

                d. Means faithful women are rescued by the birth of Jesus Christ who saved them via Mary…

                                a1. Genesis 3:15 Eve will be saved by bearing a son who will crush Satan’s head

                                a2. Eve bears a daughter (Genesis 5:4) who bears a daughter leading to Mary

                                a3. Salvation comes via woman giving birth to The Savior (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7)

                e. Galatians 3:28 divine order = not hierarchy, but complementary (1 Cr. 12 properly placed)

MAKE A WISH. I Kings 3:4-15. 04/10/2022. #9

⁴ Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place: Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. ⁵ At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?” ⁶ And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. ⁸ And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. ⁹ Therefore give to Your servant an [a]understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” ¹⁰ The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, ¹² behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. ¹³ And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. ¹⁴ So if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen[b] your days.” ¹⁵ Then Solomon awoke; and indeed it had been a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.

1. Offerings at Gibeon

                a. The Great High Place was at Gibeon

                                a1. The Gibeonites were not Jews

                                a2. Josiah 9 Joshua was tricked into making a covenant with the Gibeonites

                                a3. Gib. became hewers of wood and bearers of water for the Tabernacle

                                a4. Gibeon = located NW of Jerusalem

                                a5. Seven male descendants of Saul were executed by Gibeonites in revenge for Saul slaughtering Gib. men

                b. Shortly after Solomon ascended the throne, he offers 1,000 sacrifices to the Lord @ Gibeon

2. God makes an offer

                a. Only place in Scripture where God gives someone an open-ended offer to grant a wish

                                a1. Ask whatever he wants

                b. Solomon begins well

                                a1. He asks for discernment to rule Israel

                                a2. Solomon admits that he is immature

                                a3. Solomon thanks God for grace to David/him

                c. Sol. is unsure of himself and the task is great

                c. Philippians 4:9-12 Paul had to learn to be content

                d. The sudden acquisition of dominance and prosperity cannot be successfully handle by most

                  people (Hollywood stars, politicians, celebrities)

                                a1. Requires maturity and thankfulness

                                a2. Responsibility to use influence for Lord

                e. Once Sol. obtained fame, he focused on self

                                a1. Forgot why he asked for discernment

                                a2. Solomon used his subject, not helped them

                f. Philippians 2 one cannot focus on self and others at the same time as a priority

                g. Wisdom can be used for justice or scheming                 h. Sol. makes a feast and set the tone for his reign

DEADLY EXCEPTIONS. I Kings 3:1-3. 04/03/2022. #8.

¹ Now Solomon made a treaty with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and married Pharaoh’s daughter; then he brought her to the City of David until he had finished building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall all around Jerusalem. ² Meanwhile the people sacrificed at the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the Lord until those days. ³ And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense at the high places.

1. High king and high places

                a. Solomon now begins his reign after removing some troublesome men from David’s reign

                b. Solomon marries a princess from Egypt

                                a1. No indication that pharaoh’s daughter accepted the Jewish faith

                                                b1. The marriage sealed the treaty between Israel and Egypt

                                                b2. Sol. married other princesses

                                                b3. These wives turn Solomon’s heart away from the Lord

                                a2. Joseph had married the daughter of an Egyptian priest

                c. Solomon lived in David’s palace

                                a1. Solomon wanted a more glorious house, so he spent 13 years constructing his palace (full of grandeur and glory)

                                a2. Solomon lived in the City of David on Mt. Zion until his palace was finished

                d. Sol. also built the Temple and the wall around Jerusalem (would be destroyed by Babylonians)

                e. Even though the priests still used the tabernacle, they sacrificed in the high places

2. Solomon’s foibles

                a. Besides marrying foreign wives, Sol. Offered at the high places

                b. Sol. loved the Lord and followed God’s statutes

                                a1. He followed his father’s David’s love for God and his allowances for self

                                a2. Solomon loved God + women + wealth + wonder of grandeur

3. Death by the exceptions

                a. Solomon followed God except…

                                a1. He also loved sacrificing at high places

                                a2. He also loved many beautiful women

                                a3. He also loved opulence

                b. Matthew 6:24 you cannot serve 2 masters

                                a1. Divided loyalties will bring one to ruin

                                a2. I Kings 18 one cannot serve God and something else at the same time

                c. Love of the flesh will always supersede the love for God, for it is all consuming (Ecclesiastes 2)

                d. I Corinthians 1:29 God will not share his glory with anyone or anything (Romans 1)

                e. Many people have fallen because of divided loyalty (Samson, Balaam, Demus, Joash…)

                f. James 1:12-15 Obsession must be conquered or one will fall into sin
