Galatians 5:19-21

So Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.

Then Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from Havilah all the way to Shur, which is east of Egypt. He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.

Galatians 5:1-6 [New King James Version (NKJV)]

1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, 24 which things are symbolic. For these are [a]the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar— 25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children— 26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. 27 For it is written:

“Rejoice, O barren,

You who do not bear!

Break forth and shout,

You who are not in labor!

For the desolate has many more children

Than she who has a husband.”

28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. 29 But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. 30 Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.

  1. Paul uses Abraham. Sarah. and Hagar as examples of old and new covenants
    1. Paul calls his illustration an allegory or a figure
      1. A type is an intentional Old Testament image that foretells a New Testament event (Hebrews 7 Melchizedek as a type of Christ, Matthew 12:40, Jonah in fish; John 3 brass serpent…)
      1. An illustration, figure or allegory using an Old Testament event to demonstrate a New Testament point (Matthew 12:4 David eating the showbread, Romans 4 Abraham; Hebrews 1 angels)
    1. Abraham didn’t take Hagar as a wife to be a type of the Law
      1. Abraham made a decision of the flesh
      1. Abraham colluded with Sarah to fulfill promise his way
    1. Sarah = a symbol 01 effective faith for promise was via Isaac
    1. Hagar = symbol of Law for Ishmael wasn’t promised son
      1. Hagar was a legitimate concubine just at the Law was a proper reflection of God’s holiness
      1. Hagar could not produce the promised son (not her job or fault) and the Law couldn’t give salvation
  2. The Hagar/Sarah allegory was a brilliant illustration
    1. The Law, like Hagar, was a covenantal dead and
    1. The illustration uses the legalizers’ argument against them
    1. Hagar was kicked out like the Galatians needed to do to Judaizers
    1. Hagar represented the world while Sarah represented faith
    1. Ishmael and Isaac both came from Abraham, just as the Law and Christ both came from God, but only Christ gives life
    1. Being the physical descendants of Abraham did not save one
      1. Matthew 3:9 Jews weren‘t saved by birthright
      1. John 8, Pharisees weren’t spiritual! descendants of Abraham
  3. Ishmael and Isaac had two different types of beginnings
    1. Ishmael‘s birth was natural
      1. Like the Law. which always existed since God’s holiness is forever, Hagar gave birth naturally
      1. The Law merely reflected a holiness that existed
    1. Isaac’s birth was supernatural
      1. Sarah was well beyond childbearing years (90)
      1. The Incarnation and Resurrection were supernatural
    1. Ishmael represents things temporal, worldly, and ruinous
    1. Hagar represents earthly Jerusalem and Sarah = spiritual Jerusalem
      1. Paul asks, “Who is your mother?”
      1. To follow the Law makes the slave woman mom
    1. Paul uses Isaiah 54:1: “…there are more children of the desolate woman then there are of the married woman”
      1. More children to the unsaved than the saved
      1. More enriched unsaved, hut in eternity the saved are rich and time exclusively with the Lord
  4. Stand firm
    1. Paul reminds the Galatians that just as Ishmael mocked Isaac (Genesis 21), Christians will be persecuted
    1. Three major pressures on believers:
      1. Harassment {persecution}
      1. Heresy (like Legalism, cults, and speculation]
      1. Hedonism {fleshly worldly, and self-indulgent)
    1. The Galatians needed to stand firm in the face of temptation (from legalizers) and threats (I Thessalonians 3:14)
      1. Threats & temptation are refining fires testing faith
      1. True faith resists temptation and stands firm under fire
      1. Fake faith falters under both (Paul’s concern for the Galatians)

31 Now they had driven back the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. So the people were very faint. 32 And the people rushed on the spoil, and took sheep, oxen, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood. 33 Then they told Saul, saying, “Look, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating with the blood!” So he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a large stone to me this day.” 34 Then Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, ‘Bring me here every man’s ox and every man’s sheep, slaughter them here, and eat; and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.’ ” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night, and slaughtered it there. 35 Then Saul built an altar to the Lord. This was the first altar that he built to the Lord. 36 Now Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and plunder them until the morning light; and let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.” 37 So Saul asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But He did not answer him that day. 38 And Saul said, “Come over here, all you chiefs of the people, and know and see what this sin was today. 39 For as the Lord lives, who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But not a man among all the people answered him. 40 Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and my son Jonathan and I will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” 41 Therefore Saul said to the Lord God of Israel, “Give a perfect lot.” So Saul and Jonathan were taken, but the people escaped. 42 And Saul said, “Cast lots between my son Jonathan and me.” So Jonathan was taken. 43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, and said, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. So now I must die!” 44 Saul answered, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.” 45 But the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has accomplished this great deliverance in Israel? Certainly not! As the Lord lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die. 46 Then Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.

  1. Saul’s foul fowl enemies heme to meet
    1. Saul’s foolish oath produced six major errors:
      1. The oath was evil and unnecessary
      1. His soldiers tainted and suffered from Saul’s folly
      1. Jonathan unwittingly sinned against the oath
      1. The famished people killed and ate meet with the blood after sundown
      1. Saul threatens to kill his son, Jonathan
      1. The victory was incomplete
    1. At sundown the famished troops pounce on the spoils from the Philistine camp
      1. The day of the oath was over
      1. Soldiers kill animals and eat raw bloody meat
    1. Saul thought that a holy war required a holy fast
      1. Fasting and fighting do not go together
      1. Saul sets up a stone for proper slaughter and draining of the meat
    1. Saul does not realize that the troop’s sins and unfinished victory were all his fault
      1. Saul caused the soldiers to sin
      1. When we engage in behavior that trips others up we are part of their sin
    1. I Corinthians 3:13 to cause another to stumble is to cause sin
      1. Jonathan had done nothing wrong
      1. Saul invented a wrong with a foolish oath
  2. Stopped in their tracks
    1. After supper Saul wanted to finish the battle by wiping out the rest of the Philistine army
    1. The priests realized that the sin of the people may have lost the blessing of God on the endeavor
      1. Psalm 66:18 sin breaks fellowship with God
      1. They insist on casting lots to see if God was going to continue to bless Israel’s efforts
    1. The actions of the priest were wise it presented a potential disaster [like Joshua at Ai)
    1. God refuses to answer Saul
      1. Saul realizes that someone violated the oath
      1. He asks his troops who had sin (no one speaks, even those who know what Jonathan did)
        1. Jonathan was used to gain the victory
        1. What Jonathan did was not his fault
  3. A failed oath
    1. Jonathan draws lets between the leadership and his troops
      1. The leadership is chosen (not fault of troops)
      1. Jonathan is chosen as the culprit
    1. All Jonathan did was taste some honey (not a sin)
    1. Saul is going to kill his son for violating a ridiculous oath that Jonathan. had never heard
      1. Later, Saul throws a spear at Jonathan for supporting David over him
      1. Saul’s men refused to allow him to kill his son
    1. Now, a double curse is on Israel: they ate blood and now they refuse to honor the conditions of the oath
    1. Saul’s failures were based in his ego, foolish emotion driven decisions, and lack of reverence for God
    1. A prideful man is always deemed to repeat his sins

12 Brethren, I urge you to become like me, for I became like you. You have not injured me at all. 13 You know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first. 14 And my trial which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. 15 What then was the blessing you enjoyed? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth? 17 They zealously court you, but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them. 18 But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you. 19 My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you, 20 I would like to be present with you now and to change my tone; for I have doubts about you. 21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law?

  1. Paul changes his approach
    1. Up to this point Paul had emphasized the theology of what the Law was and what it was not (a teacher, but not a savior)
    1. Paul now speaks to the Galatians as a pastor admonishing his flock
      1. Uses “brothers” and “dear children”
      1. Expresses “concern” and he has his “doubts”
    1. Paul is baffled why his clear teaching seems unclear to the Galatians
      1. Basic doctrines on salvation. discipleship morality, God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, heaven and eternity should be settled issues in the minds of believers
      1. No one should be able to deceive you concerning your faith (Paul had spiritually birthed them)
  2. Paul wants the Galatians to become like him
    1. Paul is not being prideful or claiming perfection (Philippians 3:14}
    1. I Corinthians 11:1 the Galatians should follow Paul as he followed Christ
      1. Mature believers should be worthy to imitate
      1. Paul was mature in faith, doctrine, and practice
    1. Paul should not have to re-disciple the Galatian believers
    1. Three bad results of having to re-disciple believers:
      1. Took unnecessary time away from other work
        1. Paul had to stop evangelizing, church planting, and discipling for the Galatians
        1. Paul had to use time and resources to correct errors that the Galatians made
      1. Errant believers cannot effectively witness
        1. Galatians should have been spreading Gospel
        1. Paul needed his efforts multiplied, but the Galatians had become a hindrance and burden
      1. Errant believers are bad testimonies, leading others into error and projecting a false image
    1. Paul stated that he had become like the Galatians culturally
      1. I Corinthians 9:22-24, became like the Gentiles to reach them
      1. Paul entered into their cultural world and showed interest in their concerns (identified with them)
    1. Paul states that the Galatians had not offended him
      1. His problem with them was not personal
      1. Paul was not affronted by their deviation. But his concern was their spiritual wellbeing
    1. Paul fondly remembered his first visit to them
      1. He was sick and they received him without scorn
      1. The Galatians had gladly received his message
      1. They treated him as if he were an angel of God
      1. They would have given Paul their eyes if possible
    1. Due to the relationship Paul had with the Galatians church. He was dismayed and fearful by their departure to legalism
  3. Galatians go from blessing and joy to enslavement to legalism
    1. Only commitment of genuine faith lasts
    1. Superficial commitment fails (I John 2:15-27)
    1. Only time will review true faith (Josh Harris versus. Justin Bieber)
    1. Paul states that zeal is good but only if for good things
      1. Zeal for fleshly things is evil
      1. Zeal for wrong and evil things is evil
      1. Zeal for good temporary things falls short
      1. Zeal for self and selfish things is evil
      1. Zeal for the Lord and righteous things is blessed
    1. Zeal and enthusiasm are not the same as righteousness
