THE FAITH OF ABRAHAM. Galatians 3:6-9 07/14/2019. #09. AM.

Galatians 3:6-9 [New King James Version (NKJV)]

6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

  1. Consider Abraham
    1. Abraham was revered by all the Jews {founding father}
      1. Many Jews in Southern Galatia
      1. Paul had taught Galatians about Abraham
    1. Important to learn correct messages out of Scripture
      1. Judaizers taught that Abraham’s works were amounted by God as righteous
      1. Paul demonstrated that Abraham’s belief was accounted by God as righteous
    1. Not eisegesis (reading into a text one’s own opinions}. but exegesis (taking out of a text what is truly there}
      1. Abraham came 400 years before Mosaic Law given
      1. Abraham was a child of God apart tram the Law
    1. Paul took the same Abraham texts as the Judaizers but gave a different interpretation (no imposing will on text]
    1. Either Abraham’s works or his faith justified him {not both}
    1. Judaizers imposed works interpretation back to Abraham
      1. Paul believed the same thing before salvation
      1. Only dedicated Old Testament saints understood faith
  2. The just shall live by faith
    1. Salvation by faith is throughout the Old Testament
      1. Job 13:15 though he slay me, yet will I trust him
      1. Psalm 2:12 blessed are those who take refuge in the Son [trust in Lord for protection and deliverance]
      1. Proverbs 3:5 trust in the Lord with all your heart…
      1. Jeremiah 17:5-10, blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord (verse 7)…but the wicked will be judged by the fruit of his doings (verse 10]
      1. Naham 1:7 the Lord…knows who trusts in him
      1. Habakkuk 2:4 the fast shall live by faith
    1. The Judge’s argument was that Abraham was justified by being circumcised as an act of obedience (Genesis 12}
      1. Hyper—literalism — reading a passage superficially without considering the greater context and meaning (what’s the real point?)
      1. The Bible is self-interpreting {1 Corinthians 2} within chapters and books as compared to rest of Bible
    1. Paul taught the Galatians the true meaning of Abraham’s call
      1. II Timothy 2:5 — important to carefully study the Word without preconceived ideas or spiritualizing it
      1. Genesis 15:6 ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD AND THIS ACCOUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS
  3. Paul challenges the Galatians to look carefully at the Word
    1. Paul puts forth three arguments that alluded most Jews:
      1. Genesis 15:6 Abraham believed God that He would provide Abraham a son and his belief justified him
        1. His belief led to his obedience _
        1. Isaiah 64:6 all work-based salvation efforts is useless self-righteousness
      1. Abraham was not under Law {predated Law]
      1. In (through; by) Abraham all the families of the world would be blessed (not just Abraham’s seed]
    1. Paul made the connection between Abraham and the present
      1. Judges taught that Abraham was blessed because he was circumcised, so the Gentiles must be circumcised
      1. Abraham was really blessed by his faith (trust) in God
        1. Faithful women were not circumcised
        1. Faith is praised in Word; not circumcision
    1. Through Abraham’s seed, not circumcised, all are blessed
    1. Never are we said to be blessed because of circumcision of Abraha
    1. Faith leads to holy acts, but acts never engender faith
